Experience adventure with outdoor sports in Ternana Valnerina

Ternana Valnerina, located in the green region of Umbria, is a true paradise for outdoor sports enthusiasts.

With its breathtaking landscapes, winding rivers and imposing mountains, this area offers a wide range of adventurous activities that allow visitors to immerse themselves in nature and experience the adrenaline rush of outdoor challenges.

Let's explore some of the most exciting and popular outdoor sports that can be practiced in Ternana Valnerina.

Water sports

Since water is the undisputed "queen" of the Park, water sports are the most widespread and practiced activities.

The most famous is undoubtedly rafting, which involves navigating sections of the river on specially designed rubber dinghies, equipped with paddles. There are numerous itineraries to choose from, ranging from the more "adrenalinic" ones right under the Marmore Falls, where the river's course has more rapids, to the calmer routes that are suitable even for children (soft rafting), along the five-kilometre stretch between Ferentillo and Arrone, which still offer exciting experiences.

Tubing is another fun way to descend the soft section slightly above the level of the water and independently, using a large rubber “donut”, assisted at all times by a guide who explains the trajectories.

Hydrospeed is a kind of river bobsleigh that you cling to so as to follow the current of faster-flowing rivers where the rapids are more pronounced.

Canyoning is the descent of streams where the water has deeply carved out the rock forming waterfalls, slides and natural pools to overcome with jumps, ropes and some swimming.

River Walking is the guided descent of the naturally formed pools, a "walk" on the riverbed when the water flow from the waterfall is closed, so it’s possible to observe the fantastic natural scenery.

In canoe-kayaking, it is possible to challenge the rapids of the Nera River in a canoe.

SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboard) is a board on which one can surf on the river by paddling with a long paddle while standing. It is easy, fun and safe.

An enchanting place for canoeing is Lake Piediluco. From its beaches, it’s possible to venture out freely with one’s own canoe or rent one from the beaches that offer this service.

Sport climbing

The Valnerina doesn't just offer thrills for water sports enthusiasts but it is also renowned for sport climbing.

The "paradise" for climbers is the Ferentillo cliff, the second largest in Italy. In this area, there are over 320 climbing routes characterized by carbonate rocks of various grades, spread across different areas and suitable for all seasons. The rocks allow for a wide variety of climbing experiences, ranging from technical slabs to overhangs.

The most popular areas that are less difficult are located just after the Precetto district, directly on the road leading to the houses of Monterivoso.

Hiking

The valley of the Nera River, with its charming villages and small medieval hamlets, is rich in historical landmarks set against a natural landscape that beckons one to spend time outdoors, discovering the many peculiarities of the region.

Numerous hiking trails wind through oaks, beeches and meadows in uncontaminated nature, where everything seems to stand still and its possible to take a stroll in complete safety and relaxation.

There are trails of varying difficulty, suitable for families and non-professionals, up to levels for expert hikers and cyclists. Although there are some basic signposts, it is advisable to contact an expert before embarking on any excursion as they can provide their experience in accompanying visitors on their chosen hike.

Mountain Biking

For those who prefer to explore the territory by bike, the Valnerina offers over 300 km of trails, dirt roads and mule tracks. From the lower Belvedere of the Marmore Falls, the trails of the Nera Greenway unfold: a dense network of unpaved routes accessible on foot or by bike, running alongside the Nera River and linked to each other to form a loop of approximately 180 kilometres.

For cyclists, the mountains of the Valnerina are considered a great challenge and an irresistible attraction, particularly due to the unspoilt nature and numerous reserved trails. The main Excursion Center – MTB School in the area is located just one kilometre before Arrone, , where guided outings along the most beautiful trails of the Valnerina can be booked with one’s own or rented bikes.
It is possible to rent mountain bikes for independent rides or book tours with experienced guides also at the upper Belvedere of Marmore and Lake Piediluco.

Air sports

For flying enthusiasts there is the "Alvaro Leonardi" airfield in Terni. The flying area, considered the largest in the province, is located in the Maratta area at "Le Sore" (7 km from the city centre).

There is a flight school at the centre: VDS - VM for both airplanes and helicopters (certified by Aero Club d'Italia, No. 174 CONI).

Orientation flights and tandem parachute jumps can be arranged at the facility.
