Appecano
The origin of Appecano dates back to Roman times, according to epigraphic evidence found over the centuries, including a plaque inserted in the masonry of the façade of the church of San Martino.
Unlike other settlements in the valley, Appecano does not show any traces of defensive structures or city walls. Instead, its layout is conceived as a "villa," that is as a group of rural houses built near to each other in a much less rational manner than castle settlements.
It is assumed, in fact, that the inhabited centre developed around the original church, consisting of a series of small houses arranged in a ring around a public space, the ancient "social" hub of the village.
