Rocca San Zenone
Some structures of the fortifications remain from the medieval fortress, such as the watchtowers, one of which was located at a higher point, allowing for the surveillance of an extensive area. This control was mainly aimed at preventing potential enemy attacks from the area around Spoleto, as this defensive stronghold was situated at the access point to the Serra Valley, on the boundary of the territory of Terni. The fortified nucleus of the Rocca was probably built on the same site where there had been an Umbrian settlement.
In the village of Rocca San Zenone, there is the "Church of San Giovanni," whose original building was almost certainly constructed before the walls of the defensive system in which it was inserted, thus prior to the 13th century. The forepart added in the 17th century aligned the façade with the medieval walls. The interior preserves frescoes from the first half of the 15th century by painters from the school of Bartolomeo da Miranda and the Master of Narni.
Outside the built-up area stands the Church dedicated to San Zenone, who was martyred and buried here. It is said that the original church was built on the saint's tomb. The current building has a gabled façade and a single-nave interior. The two chapels on either side of the façade date back to the 16th century.
