A tour in Valserra among places rich in history, art and spirituality

The Valserra, nestled between the majestic Martani Mountains and Mount Acetella, is an enchanting place that holds an authentic treasure of the Umbrian territory.

Here, the quiet Serra stream flows gently through a lush green valley, creating an evocative and unique atmosphere. The slopes of the surrounding mountains are home to a series of picturesque villages that are a true gem in this region, acting as a natural bridge between the Terni basin and Spoleto.

The ideal starting point to explore this wonderful area is Rocca San Zenone, an enchanting village that seems to have remained suspended in time. Its characteristic towers, which are still imposing and majestic, preserve the charm of the ancient history of this place.

Along the path through the Valserra, there are several villages that warrant a closer visit. One of these is Acquapalombo, where you can admire the evocative Church of San Lorenzo and the imposing entrance arch made of stone slabs, bearing witness to the ancient residence of the noble Sala family. Here, one can immerse oneself in history and admire the architecture that evokes a past rich in charm and nobility.

Continuing along the route, you come across Appecano, an ancient settlement dating back to Roman times, which was conceived as a "villa." Here the impressive  Church of San Martino stands, a place of worship that still preserves the atmosphere of times gone by. Walking through the narrow streets of Appecano, it is possible to perceive the echo of ancient civilizations that inhabited these lands centuries ago.

Collegiacone is another hidden gem along the Valserra, with its small Church of San Michele Arcangelo rising majestically above the surrounding landscape. Behind the village lie the ruins of Sant'Angelo di Rivosecco, an ancient settlement now abandoned. These ruins tell stories of a distant past and add mysterious charm to this picturesque location.

Poggio Lavarino, on the other hand, is believed to have been founded in medieval times by Benedictine monks. Here, you can visit the charming Church of San Bernardino and discover the religious history of this community. Not far from the centre are the ruins of the old water mill, once flourishing but now abandoned. Near the cemetery stands the Church of San Pietro, with its splendid frescoes that have unfortunately been neglected by the municipality. These frescoes bear witness to the art and spirituality that have characterized this area over the centuries.

Polenaco, known as "Villa Ippollinaci," is home to the charming Church of Sant'Apollinare. This enchanting village invites visitors to immerse themselves in its peaceful atmosphere and discover the secrets it holds.

Finally, Giuncano stands out for its tiny stone Church, situated in a charming environment surrounded by greenery and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This place of worship, albeit modest in size, emanates great spirituality and invites reflection and contemplation.
